BMW 328i trunk emblem size: 74 mm roundel on most E90/F30 cars, 82 mm hood badge, "328i" lettering about 150 × 30 mm. Measure before you order.
Measure before you order. Every 328i generation — E36, E46, E90 and F30 — carries slightly different trunk hardware, and later cars increasingly use adhesive-backed or camera-integrated badges. This guide gives you the numbers in millimetres, the measurement method, and a smarter material option for replacing a faded or de-chromed emblem.
BMW 328i trunk emblem sizes by generation
Roundel (round BMW logo). On the E46, E90, E92 and F30 328i, the trunk roundel is 74 mm in diameter with two locating pins on the back. The hood badge on the same cars is the larger 82 mm size that BMW has used on nearly every bonnet since 1969. Convertibles are the classic trap: the E93 328i uses a 75 mm rear roundel (OEM 51147146052), not 74 mm. Owners of older metal-bumper cars should also double check, since an E30 rear roundel measures roughly 86–87 mm.
Model lettering ("328i"). The rear designation badge is rectangular, not round. Aftermarket and OEM-style replacements for the 3 Series are commonly listed at about 150 × 30 mm, with some suppliers quoting 145 × 25 mm measured across the full text. The difference is letter spacing and font, so treat both as a working range: expect roughly 145–150 mm wide and 25–30 mm tall. Diesel and M-Lite badges are longer — up to 245 mm — which is why a "one size fits all" listing is a red flag.
G-chassis warning. From about 2019 onward many BMWs moved to adhesive-backed emblems or a badge integrated into the tailgate handle or reversing camera. If your 3 Series is a G20, verify the mounting style before you buy a pressed-in 74 mm badge.
How to measure your emblem in 60 seconds
- Diameter: measure the round badge across its widest point at the front face, not the backing.
- Pin spacing: if the old badge has two pins, measure centre-to-centre. This decides whether the new badge seats flush.
- Lettering: measure the full width of the word and the cap height of a single digit or letter.
- Mounting style: pins and grommets, plain adhesive, or handle-integrated.
Two minutes with a ruler prevents the most common complaint in this category: a badge that looks right in the listing and gaps on the car.
A better material for a replacement badge
Most replacement emblems are injection-moulded ABS with a chrome-plated or painted face. Chrome plating looks good on day one, then hazes, flakes and chips — and the plating process itself is a pollution-heavy one.
We manufacture at Nantong SINYIM Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. under the SoftEmblem brand, and our soft badges take a different route. The process is simple: a pre-made metal-like film — PET + (PVC or resin) + PMMA + ABS — is hot-stamped into shape, the backside adhesive is die-cut and trimmed, and colour is then added by screen printing. That is the whole story, and it is enough to deliver a very different product.
What that means on the car:
- No electroplating, no plating pollution. The metallic effect comes from the film structure, not a chemical bath.
- Conforms to curved surfaces. The flexible emblem hugs the compound curvature of a trunk lid instead of bridging and lifting at the edges.
- Rich, customisable colour. Screen printing opens up gloss black, carbon-look, colour-matched and two-tone options that plating simply cannot produce.
- Genuine metallic look. The multi-layer film reflects light like metal, without the weight or the chrome.
- Around ten years of service life. UV-stable, car-wash safe and fade resistant.
- Safe to handle, no sharp edges. Nothing to cut your fingers or scratch your paint during fitting.
Fitting and care tips
Clean the panel with an alcohol-based cleaner and let it dry. Dry-fit first and mark the position with low-tack tape. Apply at room temperature, press from the centre outward, and keep the car dry for 24 hours. Heat from a hairdryer helps both adhesion now and clean removal later.
Frequently asked questions
Is the trunk badge on a 328i the same as the hood badge? No. Expect 74 mm at the rear and 82 mm at the front on E46, E90 and F30 cars.
Can I de-chrome with a black badge? Yes — a soft, screen-printed badge is the easiest way to do it without damaging paint or trim.
Do I need the OEM part number? It helps. For the common 2-pin set, 51148132375 (82 mm) and 51148219237 (74 mm) are the frequently quoted references.
Measure once, choose the right millimetre size, and your 328i's tail will look factory-fresh for the next decade.
